Happy Spring, Music Studio Families!

We hope you enjoyed the first weekend of the spring season! The first day of spring arrived on Thursday, March 20th at 5:01am EST, and with it, warmer temperatures, longer daylight hours, and more buds and blooms.

Thank you for attending our Music Studio General Meeting last Tuesday. If you missed it, no worries - you can view the minutes HERE

Inside you'll find the current roles and responsibilities, so you can begin thinking about joining the Executive Board in advance of our June election because...

WE NEED YOU!

With four graduating parents on the current board, it is imperative that we are able to maintain a strong board in order to continue to provide support for the future cohorts of our Music Studio. Volunteers are the life blood of all that we do!

CONCERTO CONCERT

Please come out this Thursday, March 27th, at 6pm for the Concerto Concert, featuring the winners of the fall Concerto Competition, who will perform solo pieces, and the LaGuardia Philharmonic Orchestra.

The Orchestra accompanies the concerto winners, and performs selections from advanced works from the standard orchestral, concerto, and choral repertoire, including a diverse and inclusive repertoire of composers, styles and genres, all of which foster the art of orchestral ensembles. This ensemble is open to the most advanced sophomore, junior, and senior instrumentalists.

Ironically, this concert is usually not well attended. Let's change that!

Get your tickets now, and bring a friend! You won't be disappointed.

Women in Music: Guitar Legends

March is dedicated to women who have made remarkable strides and contributions to our world. International Women's Day was celebrated on March 8th - an annual celebration that recognizes women's contributions across various fields and brings awareness to gender equality, while promoting empowerment. This year's theme is "Accelerate Action".

This week, we continue to center around women's contributions in music, focusing on female guitarists.

Here are a few women who have paved their own path and inspired future female guitarists in various genres of music.

Sister Rosetta Tharpe

Sister Rosetta Tharpe was a singer, songwriter, and a guitarist, who gained popularity in the 1930's and 40's. She combined her love for gospel music with the electric guitar, being among the first gospel singers to appeal to both rhythm & blues and rock & roll audiences. Sister Rosetta Tharpe was referred to as "The Godmother of Rock & Roll", influencing such musicians as Chuck Berry, Johnny Cash, Elvis Presly, Jerry Lee Lewis, Eric Clapton and Tina Turner.

She was a pioneer in her guitar technique by being one of the first popular recording artists to use heavy distortion on the electric guitar, which gave rise to electric blues.

Bonnie Raitt

Bonnie Lynn Raitt is a singer, songwriter and guitarist, known for her slide guitar playing. The legendary B.B. King once said of Bonnie that she is "the best damn slide player working today." Rolling Stone named her on their 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time list.

Bonnie has 13 Grammy wins, including  a Lifetime Achievement Award.

Her principal touring guitar is a customized Fender Stratocaster, which became the basis for a signature model in 1996. Raitt was the first female musician to receive a signature Fender line.

In 2006 Rolling Stone included Kaki on their "New Guitar Gods" list. She was the only woman, and the youngest to be featured. Rolling Stone also hailed her as "a genre unto herself."

Kaki has recorded six LP's, worked with the Foo Fighters and Timbaland, and contributed to film and television soundtracks.
