Happy Monday, Music Families!

We hope you had a chance to see the wonderful La belle Hélène this past weekend. Congratulations to the cast, crew and pit orchestra on an amazing production!

Our spring concert season continues next week with the much anticipated Concerto Concert, on Thursday, March 27th at 6pm, featuring the winners of the Concerto Competition and the LaGuardia Philharmonic Orchestra. The orchestra backs the concerto winners, but also performs additional works. This is a truly amazing concert but unfortunately, it isn't usually well attended. Help us change that. Spread the word far and wide and help us fill the concert hall!

Looking ahead to April 2, we have our beloved annual tradition of the Riverside Choral Concert at the historic Riverside Church in Morningside Heights. You absolutely do not want to miss this concert!

Tickets are available now for this event. Click Riverside Choral Concert to get your tickets.

Many volunteers will be needed to make this wonderful event run smoothly, so stay tuned for communications from our Volunteer Coordinators, Sherry Stuart Berman and Sonya Houston. Alternatively, send an email to musicvolunteers2@laguardiahspa.org

Celebrating Women's History Month

Women in Music: Drummers/Percusionnists

March is dedicated to women who have made remarkable strides and contributions to our world. International Women's Day was celebrated on March 8th - an annual celebration that recognizes women's contributions across various fields and brings awareness to gender equality, while promoting empowerment. This year's theme is "Accelerate Action".

This week, we continue to center around women's contributions in music, focusing on female drummers/percussionists.

Here are a few women who have paved their own path and continue to inspire future female drummers/percussionists in all genres of music.

Viola Smith

Born as Viola Clara Schmitz in Mount Calvary, Wisconsin in 1912, Viola played in a family orchestra with her seven sisters. She chose to play the drums because all of the other instruments were taken.

In a 1942 article written for Down Beat magazine, Viola argued that women musicians could play just as well as men and "In these times of national emergency, many of the star instrumentalists of the big name bands are being drafted. Instead of replacing them with what may be mediocre talent, why not let some of the great girl musicians of the country take their place?''

Viola Smith was recognised for her exceptional speed and ability to handle complex rhythms that were extremely innovative for Swing and Big Band era. Additionally, she gained fame for her energetic performances and was one of the first female drummers to achieve national recognition.

Sheila E.

Sheila Cecilia Escovedo, professionally known as Sheila E., is a singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and actress. She is often referred to as the "Queen of Percussion" for having become the first female drummer and percussionist in mainstream pop music. She has played drums and percussion on all of her own albums and has worked with such artists as George Duke, Prince, Michael Jackson, Cyndi Lauper, Beyoncé, Phil Collins, Ringo Starr and Gloria Estefan, just to name a few.

In April 2024, she released her ninth album entitled Bailar. The album earned a nomination at the 67th Annual Grammy Awards for Best Tropical Latin Album and the album's single Bemba Colorá won the Grammy Award for Best Global Music Performance.

Bobbye Hall

Bobbye Jean Hall is a percussionist who has recorded with a plethora of rock, soul, blues and jazz artists such as Bill Withers, Stevie Nicks, Janis Joplin, Carole King, Marvin Gaye, Rod Stewart and Tracy Chapman, just to name a few, and is considered one of the greatest session drummers of all time. She has musician credits on 20 songs that reached the top ten spot on the Billboard Hot 100 charts.

“My mother said that I had a dream. I would play on her pots and pans, I’d beat on the garbage cans in the alley. I’d whack on them with sticks and my hands or whatever. I didn’t talk very much as a child… I just picked up the drums and that’s where I spoke from.”

Click the images below to hear Bobbye Hall talk about her work as a session musician and to hear her work on Joni Mitchell's You Turn Me On I'm A Radio, which reached #25 on the Billboard Hot 100 in November of 1972.
