Welcome Back to Another Week, Music Families!

We hope you enjoyed a restful and rejuvenating midwinter break!

We're closing out February this week and watching daylight get incrementally longer with each passing day, which means spring can't be too far behind. Woo hoo!

Music Studio General Meeting

Thank you for joining us at our last general meeting which was held virtually on Thursday, February 13, 2025. We were joined by AP of Music, Ben Schott, who gave an update on the LaGuardia Music Studio happenings for the past six weeks and answered many of your burning questions. If you weren't able to join us, not to worry. You can find the minutes and a link to the recording here

We are in the process of planning our March meeting and will update you soon. In the meantime, if you have any questions about joining the board next year (hint, hint), or about anything else, or maybe you'd like us to cover a specific topic, please email us at music@laguardiahspa.org

We'd love to hear from you, and work with you too!

Celebrating African American's Achievements & Contributions in Music

William Grant Still: "The Dean of African-American Composers"

William Grant Still, Jr. composed almost 200 works, including, nine operas, five symphonies, four ballets, art songs, chamber music, works for solo instruments, and more than 30 choral works.

He arranged music for films such as Pennies From Heaven, Lost Horizon. William was also hired to arrange music for Stormy Weather in 1943, but left the project due to Twentieth Century Fox's treatment of African Americans.

William's opera Troubled Island, a collaboration with poet Langston Hughes, was performed in 1949 by the New York City Opera. This was  the first time the company performed an opera  by an American composer, and it is the first time an opera was performed by an African American for any major company.

His works were also performed internationally by the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, and the BBC Orchestra.
