Celebrating African American's Achievements & Contributions in Music

Carter G. Woodson established Negro History Week in 1926 because he realized the importance of providing a theme to bring attention to the various contributions of African Americans, that were often overlooked, and warranted emphasis.

This year's theme, as selected by the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), is "African Americans and Labor", which highlights and celebrates the impact of this work - both, skilled and unskilled, free labor and paid labor, vocational and voluntary, and the intersection and collective experiences of African Americans.

As our studio's area of focus is Music, we will highlight African Americans in this sector.

Since the Grammy's just aired this past Sunday, let's start there.

Beyoncé made Grammy history on Sunday as the first African American female solo artist to win a Grammy for country music for Cowboy Carter, act ii. On this album she pays homage to Linda Martell, the first African American Grand Ole Opry performer, and considered to be the first commercially successful African American female country artist. Sunday's wins made Beyoncé the most awarded artist in Grammy history, with 35 wins!

Student Spotlight
LaG Quintet Participates in Holocaust Remembrance

Five LaGuardia Music Studio students performed a rendition of John Williams' Schindler's List Theme at the New York City Holocaust Remembrance, commemorating the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau.

"Their powerful interpretation was a poignant reminder of music's ability to honor memory and inspire hope." ~ Deepak Marwah

The quintet was also invited to play an original piece entitled Night:Remembrances of a Genocide, for Wind Quintet, composed by senior instrumental student, Diogo Feldman.

Dear Music Studio Families,

January, along with our winter concert season has ended. February is here, and with it a new semester brimming with excitement of what's to come in the spring season.

I will make a special guest appearance at the Music Studio PA's general meeting on Thursday, February 13th, via Zoom. I'm happy to join you and answer any questions you may have.

One of the best ways to both support our program and have a great night out is to attend our concerts. All concert proceeds go directly to support our program. Our program needs include the upkeep of instruments, purchasing of music for our ensembles, and funding teaching artists that work with our students.

Our next big performance will be the Operetta: La belle Hélène, which will run March 13th through March 15th. Tickets will be available as we get closer to the date, and you can find the performance calendar here.

Please do not hesitate to contact me at Bschott@schools.nyc.gov if you have any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Benjamin Schott

Assistant Principal - Music
