NEED YOUR EXPERTISE

As we come together to tackle our school's budget crisis, many are asking "How can I help?" If you have an area of expertise or are interested in helping explore different revenue sources, please complete THIS google form. The PA is looking to create resource teams we can reach out to when there is a specific need in your area of interest/expertise. This doesn't necessarily mean more meetings so don't worry.

PA EXEC BOARD POSITION OPENING

The following position on the PA Executive board has come open:

Academic Forum Officer

Volunteer Position Description:

The Academic Forum Officers will represent the academic interests of all parents and students and support the school's academic faculty.

a)The Academic Forum Officers will convene regular meetings of the Academic Forum

to plan and provide informational sessions open to all PA members regarding academic matters of interest and post-secondary placement.

b) The Academic Forum Officers will meet with counterparts among La Guardia High School faculty, administrators, and with others involved in academic matters.

c) The Academic Forum Officers will keep the EB informed of their work at the monthly meetings and will issue reports and recommendations as appropriate, to the Executive Board, to the general membership and to the LaGuardia faculty and administration.

We will take nominations from the floor at the December PA zoom meeting. If you have any questions, please email president@laguardiahspa.org

Are you our next co-webmaster?

We are looking for someone who can start working with our current webmaster who is on his last year at our awesome school. Please read below for a description of the role and contact our current webmaster Daniel Feldman HERE if interested.

The Webmaster is a job for people who are comfortable with using the Google Workplace platform, and are willing to spend an average of 15 minutes per week helping users reset passwords.

More activity happens once a year when new officers are named, and there is a large number of users that may need guidance on how to use gmail in different devices, and possibly create/disable email accounts.

The Webmaster may be asked to help in Zoom calls for creating polls, a few times a year.

Once every several years there is the need to pay for the web domains and website host server on behalf of LAGHSPA, and instructions on how to do that will be provided to the new webmaster.

ACADEMIC FORUM

Erica Schohn, Senior Parent

As we only had 8 people register for SAT/ACT prep classes taught by Academic Approach (instead of the required minimum of 18), the special class for LaGuardia was cancelled (students who enrolled have been directly contacted by AA). However, they are allowing LaG students to take a course on Sundays that is open to students from other high schools. The price we were originally offered will be the same. That registration deadline is December 1.

Information about the virtual class options can be found HERE.

Please check the College Board site for SAT/ACT test dates. The first SAT test date in 2025 is March 8; students can take the test numerous times. Unless your child is efficient at self-prepping, test prep courses really do help and can increase scores significantly!

FAMILY ENGAGEMENT MANAGER

Jerrianna Phenix

Family Engagement Manager

From the desk of Jerrianna....

Dear LaGuardia Parents,

Like most of you, I am quite sure, I find that election season, particularly in NYC, tends to bring about a wide palette of emotions. Even if folks are quiet, politely refraining from sharing political views, a vibe of intense edginess permeates, which is the elephant in the room these days. And I find myself asking ‘why’ a lot lately, until Mr. Mackey covered the current school year budget last Friday in another lively round of Coffee and Donuts.

Truly, Mr. Mackey deserves a round of applause for openly sharing exactly where programming will be affected for the second half of the year. The clarity and detail of the data was informative. Each parent was able to listen and then digest.

The irony of balancing that occurrence with the roller coaster of this month’s political chatter, where we are all told “how” to think and believe was a welcomed and startling contrast. Mr. Mackey brought us the news. Shouldn’t that always be the goal? Share the facts.

At the risk of severely dating myself, a long time ago, in another galaxy, some of you may recall hearing about a dully named silver haired fellow, who went by Walter Cronkite, and he happened to garner the attention of some 57 million Americans who owned television sets, as everyone literally stopped what they were doing and tuned in faithfully to CBS, every single night, to learn. It was simply a report. And then he did the most unusual thing, he said, “good night.”

Thank you, Mr. Mackey, for the newsworthy update. Nothing more. Nothing less.

As always, thank you for your continued collaboration and spirited discussions. I feel privileged to work with all of you as we strive to move the needle forward positively, every day. If something is pressing, please reach out to me via email or direct cell (914-372-6360). In the meantime, I will continue to keep my promise of providing all families with accurate and timely information.

Warmest regards,

JA
