October is FAHM

October is Filipino American History Month and commemorates the first Filipinos to arrive in the United States at what is now Morro Bay California, on October 18, 1587.

In 1992, the Filipino American National Historical Society introduced FAHM, and in 2009 the United States Congress officially recognized October as Filipino American History Month in the U.S.

Today, we recognize Lucio Diestro San Pedro, Sr., who was a renowned Filipino composer, conductor, musician and teacher. In 1991, he was proclaimed a National Artist of the Philipines for Music. He studied at the University of the Philippines and The Juilliard School of Music.

Lucio San Pedro's most popular song is Sa Ugoy ng Duyan, a Filipino lullaby whose name translates to "In the Rocking of the Cradle" in Tagalog and "The Sway of the Baby Hammock" in English. The music was composed by Lucio, and the lyrics were written by Levi Celerio, another National Artist of the Philippines for Music.

Blurb From Ben
