ANNUAL AUCTION & BENEFIT UPDATE

Auction Items:

We are in desperate need of auction items. Our online auction will take place May 3rd - May 17th. Please reach out to friends, family, local neighborhood businesses, and/or any connections you have to help us procure items for the auction. You can print out a copy of the donation form HERE or click HERE to use the online form to make a donation. Deadline to donate auction items is Friday, April 26th. Questions? Benefit: 

The benefit is taking place on Thursday, May 16th. Tickets go on sale Friday, April 5th. Tickets are $125/per person. There will be a 4-day early bird special ($100/per person) April 5th – April 8th. A link to purchase tickets will be emailed soon. Join us for an evening of food, fun and raising money for our students.

COLLEGE RESOURCES

Please email Erica Blum at eblum2@schools.nyc.gov for more information about college rep visits. College visits are over for the winter. We will resume in the spring. 

Juniors
  • Check Google Classrooms and emails daily. Maintain good habits.

  • Start exploring MaiaLearning. 

  • Research careers/colleges (Big Future and college websites). Sample template: Please go to file>make a copy>rename so you can make any changes and fill in your own information and add columns that work for you.

  • Create a tentative balanced college list.

  • Learn about financial aid terms and information (explore websites, attend live HESC, review HESC library, sign up for uAspire webinars).

  • Demonstrated interest is important.

  • Attend college fairs and information sessions.

  • Create a professional sounding email address to collect information. Reach out to colleges! Sign up for emails/newsletters!

  • Research potential essay topics.

  • Continue to do well in classes and participate in extracurricular activities.

  • Plan ahead. Stay organized.

  • Practice SAT or ACT and decide which one to take, if any. Explore Fair Test for test optional information. 

  • Fill out NYCDOE Family Income Inquiry Form (aka lunch form).

Seniors
  • Continue to enter college decisions/outcomes in Maia.

  • Indicate in Maia if you applied to colleges with test scores.

  • Compare offers and financial aid packages.

  • Start making final campus visits.

  • Reach out to colleges if you are still having trouble submitting your FAFSA.

  • Pay attention to deposits deadlines.

  • Continue to do well in your classes!

Help the LaGuardia High School Jazz Orchestra go to Copenhagen before it's too late!

The Jazz Orchestra has been invited to Copenhagen to spend their spring break week collaborating with Sankt Anna Gymnasium, the top upper secondary school of music in Denmark.

Hemsley Lighting Programs

The 19th annual lighting portfolio review April 5-7, 2024 in New York City is designed to give students a chance to meet first hand with professional designers so that they can improve their portfolios and get answers and advice from those already working in the industry. Roger Rees Awards Scenic and Costume Design Showcase is an opportunity to highlight talented students with an interest in designing for the stage. Up to five students will be selected as winners from each design category to showcase their unique scenic and costume designs inspired by the New York City Center's upcoming Encores! performance of Titanic.

OUTSIDE STUDENT OPPORTUNITIES**

(EXTRA)ORDINARY TEEN PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOPS A summer 2024 program that guides teen photographers to build a personal photographic portfolio of images, learn new technical lighting and photography techniques, develop visual literacy and critical thinking, and engage in community building exercises and public speaking skills. SOUND THINKING NYC is offering a FREE 4-week summer intensive for NYC public school students interested in exploring how to turn their passion for music into a possible career. July 8 - August 2. Free lunch and weekly Metrocards provided. Deadline to submit applications: May 6, 2024. 

Ocean Awareness Contest invites students to share your personal climate story through art, writing, performance, film, or multimedia. Creatively express your personal experiences, insights, or perceptions about our changing climate reality. Apply by 6/10/24.

Believe and Inspire After School Programs offer interactive virtual after-school programs that aim to empower underserved youth to become successful leaders. Participants learn practical life skills to help accomplish their life goals. Ongoing. 

NYC Youth Leadership Councils are a network of youth focused on policy, practice, and advocacy to make real change happen in their school, neighborhood, or community. Students join peers and adult allies to act on issues that matter the most to you. YLCs are in all five boroughs and need students to make NYC a better place.

OUTSIDE PARENT OPPORTUNITIES

Brooklyn Tech student Sebastian Rajguru is surveying parents of NYC specialized schools. He is conducting research for his AP Capstone Research class. He is investigating what obstacles specialized high school parents experience when trying to access medical care for their children and how this affects their overall satisfaction with the quality of care their children receive. 

All responses are anonymous and the survey was approved by the Brooklyn Tech Institutional Review Board. The survey should only take about 5-10 minutes. This is the link to the survey: https://forms.gle/5yJE7vC6GgH41bCv9. Email Sebastian srajguru8350@bths.edu with any questions or concerns. 

SUBSTANCE ABUSE PREVENTION & INTERVENTION

The NYC DOE Substance Abuse Prevention and Intervention Specialists (SAPIS) program provides a range of prevention and intervention services in grades K-12. The goals of the program are to:

  • Reduce the prevalence of substance abuse among youth
  • Delay the initiation of substance abuse behavior among youth
  • Decrease the negative health, social, and educational consequences associated with substance abuse
  • Prevent the escalation of substance abuse behaviors to levels requiring treatment
