114th Annual International Women's Day
In the U.S., March is observed as Women's History month, and during this month we celebrate March 8th as International Women's Day, a global celebration acknowledging the achievements and contributions of women, while also seeking gender equality.
The official colors are purple, green and white. Purple symbolizes justice, dignity and being loyal to the cause. Green is a symbol of hope and new beginnings, while white signifies purity and equality. These colors originated from the Women's Social and Political Movement (WSPU) in the UK in 1908, and was brought to the US by American suffragists who worked with them.
Every year there are two themes; one proposed by the United Nations, and one by the International Women's Day community (IWD). This year, the UN official theme for 2024 is Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress.
"By investing in women, we can spark change and speed the transition towards a healthier, safer, and more equal world for all."
The campaign theme by the IWD is Inspire Inclusion.
"This year's campaign theme underscores the crucial role of inclusion in achieving gender equality. It calls for action to break down barriers, challenge stereotypes, and create environments where all women are valued and respected. Inspire Inclusion encourages everyone to recognize the unique perspectives and contributions of women from all walks of life, including those from marginalized communities."
