PA Update March 25, 2014

NEWS from the Parents Association
Tuesday, March 25, 2014
Dear LaGuardia Community –
Wow… talk about turning in your homework late late LATE! I have so many good excuses though…
Anyway… so sorry for the delay in getting out the news, but I chaperoned the Frost Valley field trip this past weekend (which was just great — no phone service! spotty, slow WiFi and only in the dining hall! Heaven!) and came

home with too much to do and not enough time to do it. So HERE’s my belated (but, hopefully, beloved) Tuesday edition ofNews from the PA.
What did I learn on the AP Environmental field trip? Besides all about the watershed, and the reservoir system (not to mention real, live… and some dead… wildlife and spectacular starry night skies)? That our LaGuardia kids are just the BEST! (And our teachers, staff, and parents are pretty darned swell as WELL!) But the staff at Frost Valley went on and on about how great our kids are. Smart. Open to new ideas and
Ms. Hunt and Dr. Stricklin came along.
adventures. And “nice.” They see a lot of school groups, but they told me they always look FORWARD to having our LaGuardia groups. Isn’t that a great thing to hear? And I must say a word about how special our teachers and staff are to give up their personal time (on a weekend, no less) to make sure our kids have this kind of great experience. (And, as always, a special THANKS to science teacher Mr. Neal Singh for spear-heading this trip for the past four years… Bravo!) And PARENT CHAPERONES… you are totally awesome and this kind of event could NOT HAPPEN without you AND without ALL of the generous contributions of our entire LaGuardia High School community.
Which brings me to my next plug… FUNDRAISING! The LaGuardia GaLa! online auction is still going on (and if you STILL HAVE DONATIONS send them to TODAY and they can still be part of the auction!) Every dollar we earn goes to subsidize things like the Frost Valley trip and enables every student who wants to go to have that opportunity. So go the auction website and BID. You’ll get a great deal, and you’ll be helping our wonderful kids while you do it! Share the link with friends & family. CLICK HERE and happy bidding!

Auditions for GaLa! Performance — May 19th, One Night Only

Audition DATES – Monday April 7th and Tuesday April 8th – from 5:00 to 8:00

Honoring legendary folk-singer and humanitarian, Peter Yarrow. Looking for actors/singers/musicians and dancers for opening and closing numbers. Students from all studios are invited to audition.

Please prepare 16 bars of a rock/folk song for audition.  If you can play guitar, please accompany yourself, otherwise make sure to have music ready for the accompanist.

The Opening Number will include several sets of trios singing “If I Had A Hammer”. Then ” If I Had a Hammer” will mash into “This Land is Your Land” and more.

We are looking for singers who have rock/folk/soul voices.  We also need singers who can also play guitar and singers who can move.

The Closing Number will be “This is Land is Your Land” with Peter Yarrow. We are looking for singers to sing along with Peter as well as dancers to dance in front of the singers. (The dancers for this number do not have to be able to sing.)

Sign up sheets will be posted in the front lobby next week!

A Reminder for Parents & Students Who Do NOT Have Health Insurance

As you may know, students and their parents who currently do not have health insurance must be enrolled in a health insurance plan by March 31, 2014. This date marks the end of the open enrollment period for private health insurance. Those who do not have coverage will have to pay a penalty.  In addition, most residents will not be able to apply for private insurance again until the next open enrollment period, which starts November 15, 2014.
The Affordable Care Act makes it easy to get health insurance.  Most uninsured New Yorkers can get help paying for coverage. Parents may go to to see health insurance plan options. They can also use the portal to sign up for Medicaid and Child Health Plus now and after March 31st.
